At St Peter and St Paul we are constantly trying to further reduce waste and encouraging recycling where possible. The Eco-School has visited Viridor's Material Recycling Facility (MRF) at Great Blakenham and the Foxhall Waste and Recycling Centre near Ipswich and used the information gained from these visits to promote the 4 R's: Recycle, Reduce, Recover and Reuse. In 2008 it was the first school to renew their 'Pledge to Recycle'
In order to do this, the term produced a PowerPoint presentation, which has been shared (during Green Week) at school with parents, governors and the local councillors. The children enjoyed explaining what we could all do to help the environment. The CD roms which are endorsed by Viridor, have been distributed to other schools in the community and are available through school if anyone would like a copy.
The team has also been encouraging carbon friendly journeys to and from school. During Green Week we organised target books with the slogan 'A star a day is the low carbon way'. Children were awarded with a star if they walked, biked, took the bus or shared a car. The school realised that for some families these was not an option. Therefore parents were encouraged to park in the local car parks and walk to school. This not only lowered emissions but also made it safer outside the school.
We also hold a Walk the Teacher to School Week to further reinforce the low carbon message.
