With an exciting line-up of local and national speakers, the conference aimed to inspire Suffolk-based businesses to help Suffolk become the Greenest County.
Mike More, Chief Executive of Suffolk County Council chaired the event, whilst Sir Michael Rake, Chairman of BT delivered the headline speech. The conference featured keynote addresses on opportunities and challenges for businesses in the response to climate change. The event concluded with the presentation ceremony for the first Greenest County Awards, an annual event highlighting how Suffolk's communities, businesses and schools are leading the way on a wide range of environmental areas, from cutting transport to buying local products to protecting the region’s biodiversity.
Eddy Alcock, a Suffolk County Councillor and portfolio holder for environment and waste management, said before the event: "Creating the Greenest County is a shared vision for sustaining a new approach to environmental issues. Everybody in business, communities, and schools has a part to play in improving our local environment. Creating the Greenest County is all about actions, not words. After the high profile conference in October, I have every confidence in this conference being equally successful. I am looking forward to the presentation of the Greenest County Awards, so we can celebrate everybody's achievements in making a difference in Creating the Greenest County!"
Peter McCarthy-Ward, BT Regional Director, East of England said; “Suffolk is making an important contribution to tackling global environmental issues, but we must do more. Creating the Greenest County is focused on helping those who live and work in Suffolk take the lead on being green – environmentally, economically and socially. With focus on the community response to climate change and enhancing and valuing the environment, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved".
Creating the Greenest County is supported by Business Link, CRed Suffolk Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, CBI, IP-City, and the Suffolk Development Agency.
Sponsors for the awards include British Telecom, the Environment Agency, SLP Energy, MLM Consulting Engineers and Blue Star Skips Limited
