Debenham Woodland and Waterways Project

The Debenham Woodland and Waterways consists of 3 main area:

  • Lake
  • Woodland
  • Wildflower meadow/community orchard

Lake – 2004 excavation started for the creation of a new 1 acre lake to provide a an angling facility within the village. This is used extensively by many within the village and provides a valuable wildlife environment that has attracted large numbers of dragon flies, damselflies and possibly even an otter.

Woodland – Approx 3500-4000 native species trees have been planted since 2004 and these will be managed to provide both amenity value as well as provide timber products in the future. The woodland is home to many birds and the sky larks particularly enjoy the long grass left between the planting.

Wildflower Meadow/Orchard – A large area has been left for the development of a wildflower meadow. Both plug plants and green hay have been used to try and establish the area and this will be a work in progress. We also decided that a community orchard would enhance the site and provide fruit for both local people as well as the wildlife. 20 Suffolk Varieties have been planted so far with another 20 to be planted in February 2010.
