Shingle Street hadn’t seen a bus in years. Bawdsey residents arranged their lives to suit the bus timetable. Getting to employment or appointments, catching trains etc often meant a choice of arriving an hour early or 20 minutes late. And large buses ran around using fuel, polluting the air and taking up road space with not a single passenger on board.
SUFFOLKLINKS (Wilford Links) has transformed this. Residents and visitors still use taxis, private cars and the No 71 bus – no one service can be the answer to all requirements - but the options now include a public (mini-)bus service which only goes where and when it’s wanted and the bus stop can be a field gate, telegraph pole or front door. Sadie is the Coastlink Co-ordinator and takes bookings and Steve and Glynn, the drivers, provide the cheery faces. Even Santa Claus took a turn driving at Christmas to the delight of one young man visiting his Grandmother! And as the snow fell, passengers were called at work and arrangements made to get them home before the roads closed. SuffolkLink enables greener travel to East Suffolk’s green – and blue – corners. Leave the car – use SuffolkLink.
