Birchwood Primary School

School Waste and Recycling Award Highly Recommended

Birchwood is a small school of two hundred pupils who became part of the Eco-schools project in March 2007. As a whole school they were aware of the amount of waste they were producing and tried to reduce it. They were awarded a gold award from Suffolk County Council for recycling 80% of waste. As well as achieving the internationally recognised 'Green Flag', they are in the process of building bike shelters from sustainable materials to house the many bikes cycled in each day. The school has secured 50% funding for thermal solar panels and is awaiting the results of a matched grant.
