The Suffolk Waste Partnership, which secured £10k of BREW (Business Resources Efficiency and Waste) funding and matched this with a further £8k of their own monies, are now delivering its Seven Suffolk Streets project across the county.
Each of the seven district and boroughs selected a street with the aim of helping its residents, schools and businesses to reduce their waste by half during a collection period in March. The participating streets are:
- Abbot's Green, Moreton Hall, Bury St Edmunds
- Cliff Lane, Ipswich
- Crown Street, Brandon
- Hillside Road East, Bungay
- King Georges Avenue, Leiston
- Queen Street, Stradbroke
- The Street, Holbrook
Doorknockers have been out visiting each street, talking to residents and handing out welcome packs with tips on how to reduce their waste. A website has been set up at www.suffolk.gov.uk/sevensuffolkstreets with more information.
Abbot’s Green is home to Karen Cannard who is taking an active part in the Seven Suffolk Streets project. We first met Karen when she volunteered to take part in St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Zero Waste week in 2008. Karen has become so committed to reducing her waste, that she has her own blog called The Rubbish Diet and has also been writing a book on the subject. Karen has cut down her family’s waste so much that she now throws away less than a carrier bag full every fortnight.
