1000 Polar Bears and Penguins – A re-use and recycling art project for Christmas 2018
This year’s exciting recycled Christmas art project is all about polar bears and penguins!
As well as celebrating and promoting the importance of re-using and recycling in Suffolk, we want to raise awareness about plastic pollution and littering and the damage to the environment it can cause.
We have had a fabulous response to this year’s project with 23 schools, a library, a care home and brownies and guide groups from all over Suffolk taking part. They have been busily making over 1350 polar bears and penguins for our displays, well in excess of the 1000 target.
They will be hung in two fabulous displays upstairs at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds and at the Town Hall Cafe gallery space in Ipswich from 29 Nov, where they will be seen by thousands of visitors over the Christmas period. They will be on display until after the New Year.
The polar bears and penguins are made from all sorts of reused and recycled materials including cardboard, old wrapping paper, magazines, sweet wrappers, buttons and ribbons.
All participating schools were entered into a draw to win a £50 gardening or art supplies voucher and this year’s winner is Thomas Wolsey School Ipswich.
See our online gallery for posts of the work and the displays! They look even better in real life, so pop along if you can!
Make sure you pop in and see the fantastic displays when you are in Bury and Ipswich – the schools and groups have produced some amazing work – it just goes to show that if we all do our bit to reduce, reuse and recycle, it soon adds up to a lot!
