Sustainable Transport

What is Sustainable Transport?

Suffolk’s major towns are suffering from congestion and our roads often come to grinding halt at peak hours, with Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds being the biggest sufferers. This situation is set to become worse as our population increases alongside our dependency on the car. Suffolk County Council is now working with businesses, schools, developers and individuals by promoting sustainable travel across the board.

Sustainable travel is about encouraging people to make informed choices about the way they travel and being aware of the consequences of these choices - on their health, their environment and their local community.

It is about helping people to reduce their car dependency and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport, when and where possible. Individuals and businesses will reap the benefits of making more sustainable and informed choices about travel, as often sustainable travel will offer a cheaper and stress free alternative, as well as enabling people to build exercise into their daily life, even if it is just a 10 minute brisk walk to the bus stop.

Sustainable transport includes walking, cycling, using public transport, car sharing, using pool cars and bikes, and using vehicles that minimise carbon emissions, such as electric, LPG, bio diesel and hybrid cars.
