Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Limited (GGOWL), an Airtricity and Fluor joint venture, is playing a significant part in the development of offshore wind energy in the UK with its 500 MW offshore wind farm to be located 25km off the coast of Suffolk around the Inner Gabbard and Galloper sandbanks
The Airtricity/Fluor joint venture combines the resources of two industry leaders in their respective fields and has the financial strength to bring certainty of delivery to the project. Airtricity and Fluor will also maintain ownership of the wind farm during the operational phase.
Commenting on the project, Eddie O’Connor, Airtricity’s Chief Executive said,
"Airtricity and Fluor are delighted to be playing such a significant part in the development of offshore wind energy in the UK. Together we will assist the UK Government to meet its commitment of 10 percent of UK electricity being derived from renewable sources by 2010.
The 500MW Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm, to be built 25 miles off the Suffolk coast, will produce enough green energy for 415,000 homes; equivalent to the domestic electricity demand of Suffolk, saving almost 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
