Schools

Schools are where the next generation can learn how to respond to climate change and should lead by example.

Suffolk’s schools are already engaged in a variety of exciting initiatives, from Ecoschools to the award-winning Kitchen Garden Project. We are developing further resources that will enable schools, teachers and pupils to contribute to the aim of Creating the Greenest County – from education packs to support for school travel plans and greening school campuses. There is also a Schools category in our new Awards programme – find out more here. And check back on this page for updates – we will be adding lots more useful information and advice!

Eco-Schools is an international scheme that draws together a range of environmental actions, from energy saving to greening the school grounds. In Suffolk, the Advisory Service has helped over 100 schools to register with the programme, with around 60 having achieved awards. Central to the initiative is pupil involvement at all levels from planning to implementation. Eco-Schools support the DfES Sustainable Schools Framework.

Our target is to increase the number of registered schools to 120 and those with awards to 80 by the end of March 2008. If your school is interested in joining up, please contact the Advisory Teacher for Environmental Education. And more details on getting involved with the Kitchen Garden Project can be found here.

Suffolk is included in the Building Schools for the Future programme and we aim to ensure that all new schools will be built to the highest environmental standards. Is your school involved with BSF? Read here about one award-winning new school building that’s really broken the boundaries.

Transport to school is a further area where we can provide advice and support. Do you want to create a green travel plan for your school, learn about setting up car clubs or walking buses, or improve the school bus service? Find out more here about school travel plans, or click here or call 08456 066067 for information about home to school transport, entitlement to free transport, services for students with special needs, and more.
