There are easy and free things you can do reduce the amount of electricity and gas you use, without sacrificing the warmth and comfort of your home:

  • Spend less time in the shower – aim for 4 minutes 
  • Don’t leave appliances on standby, turn them off 
  • Run your washing machine at 30C or lower
  • Only boil the water you need in the kettle 
  • Turn down your thermostat by 1C 
  • Turn down radiators in rooms you use less often

Projects that can help you boost the energy efficiency of your home

Insulation

One of the most effective things you can do is to make sure your home is well-insulated. There are lots of ways you can do this:

  • Add or top up loft insulation
  • Put draught excluders around the inside of your external doors
  • Use blinds, shutters or curtains
  • Install double-glazing or check your existing double-glazing to make sure seals are still effective

Keep the Heat is a project which enables community groups and parish/town councils across Suffolk to use thermal imaging cameras and equipment for free to carry out heat loss surveys for residents in their local community.
