Ipswich Low Carbon Heat Network

Did you know that heating accounts for about 37% of UK carbon emissions?

A heat network is one way that we can future proof how we heat homes and businesses and reduce our carbon footprint. We have already been investigating a possible heat network right here in Suffolk that runs from Constantine Road to the University and down to Cliff Quay.

What is a heat network?

A heat network is like a central heating system at home, but built up to a town or city scale. At home you may have a gas boiler and radiators in several rooms. The Ipswich Low Carbon Heat Network aims to have a single low-carbon heat source feeding heat to many buildings, using pipes buried in the roads and connected to individual buildings. This would be similar to how gas pipes and electricity cables are buried now.

Why should we be exploring heat networks?

Heat networks offer heating to multiple buildings with a lower carbon footprint than existing gas boilers or heat pumps that are installed in each individual building. As the cost of gas increases or becomes difficult to maintain, the Heat Network aims to be lower-cost than other future heating alternatives.

What is the timeline for the project?

An initial feasibility study has indicated the project is viable. This means a more thorough investigation could progress.

Right now, like councils before us, we are working with partners to see if there is a robust business case for the Ipswich Low Carbon Heat Network. If there is a reliable business case, we will seek funding and partners to deliver this exciting transformative project for Suffolk. This business case will also reveal the best way to deliver the project for our area which might mean changes to location.

It is hoped construction will start in 2027/2028 subject to planning, funding and other factors.
